News fatigue

Hi, I’m Kyra, and I suffer from news fatigue.

I was diagnosed about 8 months ago when the world was nearing the 2016 United states presidential election. It started when I was browsing one of my favourite websites, Reddit. I couldn’t even enjoy one of my favourite bedtime rituals because it was plagued with stories about the election. The internet exploded and I was stuck in the chaos.

The news overload caused me to avoid many sites and social media because it felt like everybody wanted to only talk about one thing and lots about it.

An article on the New York Times shares similar thoughts:

“It feels as if we are living in a Superconducting Super Collider of news, with information bombarding us at a head-spinning velocity. The result is a fatigue about the headlines — lately about politics — that has prompted some people to withdraw from the news, or curb their consumption of it.”

They included a comic that completely summed up my current situation

What is one to do? Just stop watching the news and be completely ignorant to the problems of the world? ugh, if someone told me it was going to be this hard to be a grown-up I would have opted out. However, luck for you I have a cure!
